Academic research describes Do It Yourself (DIY) as behaviour where "individuals engage raw and semi-raw materials and component parts to produce, transform or reconstruct material possessions, including those drawn from the natural environment (e.g. landscaping) according to Wolf & McQuitty (2011). In recent years, DIYs have taken on a wider skill set and now includes arts and craft, small construction project and other home improvement. This is done without engaging the services of experts and provides individuals with alternative options rather than pursuing normal consumer models.
Hacks or life hacking refers to any trick, shortcut, skill or novelty method that increase productivity and efficiency, in all walks of life.
