Did you know that there are techniques, an art even, to taking selfies.

Most of us just hold the camera up to our face and shoot.  Then we do this a couple hundred times more and are met with less than the desired result. And if we're lucky we may get one good shot in for our labour. Finally another half hour is spent deleting all the rejected photos that did make the cut.

So how can we take better photographs and release our inner model?  Let's run through a few quick ways adapted from How to take Flattering Photos of Yourself by wikiHow:

1. Shoot from above - This angle flatters our face as it enhances our eyes but gives the appearance that our face and neck is smaller.  Don't take the camera too high but rather shift your hand out and a bit above eye level

2. Play to the shadowed side of your face - take a practice picture to determine where your light source is coming from. Take the picture from darker side which adds to a slim look

3. Change up your Pose - try taking photos with a side profile shot or experiment with different poses

4. Rule of Thirds - don't place your self in the centre of the shot, but rather to the side and try to place your eyes at least a third down from the top of the photo. This makes for a more interesting and flattering photograph

5. Use the main camera on your smart phone -  This camera is usually of a much better quality

6. No double chin or sloppy shoulders - Try lengthening your neck and moving your chin away from your body to avoid double chins. Slouchy is never a good look, so try pulling your shoulders down and back for your pics.
